Celebrated Victory: TMC’s Mukul Sangma Triumphantly Named Leader of Opposition in Meghalaya State Assembly
TMC’s Mukul Sangma Appointed Leader of Opposition in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly
In a significant development for Meghalaya politics, Dr. Mukul M. Sangma, former Chief Minister and current Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, has been recognized as the Leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly from August 28. The formal announcement came via an official notification signed by Dr. Andrew Simons, Commissioner and Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Accompanying this appointment, Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, another Member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, has been designated as the Opposition Chief Whip, effective from the same date.
Previously, Speaker Thomas A Sangma mentioned that Mukul M Sangma submitted a formal request for the Leader of Opposition post. The TMC, backed by the support of the lone Congress MLA, Ronnie V Lyngdoh, contended for this position. "The TMC, led by Mukul Sangma, demanded the post of leader of the opposition as it has the support of lone Congress MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh. I have received the letter of submission and am examining the proposal," the Speaker remarked.
In the current political landscape, the TMC holds five MLA seats in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, while the Congress has witnessed a reduction from five MLAs in 2023 to just one. This reduction followed three Congress members joining the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and another being elected as an MP.
The opposition’s strength now stands at 10 percent in the 60-member assembly, underscoring a dynamic shift in the state’s political environment.
This appointive move aligns with TMC’s strategic consolidation in Meghalaya, setting the stage for a more unified opposition stance in the assembly. The confirmations of both Sangma and Lyngdoh mark a new chapter for the opposition bloc in Meghalaya.
