Celebration Erupts as Gorkhas Welcome MHA’s Powerful Resolution on NRC Biometrics-Aadhar Issue – Northeast News
Guwahati: Resolution of NRC Biometrics-Aadhar Issue Welcomed by Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a notification resolving the long-standing NRC Biometrics-Aadhar issue, much to the relief of nearly 9.35 lakh people in Assam, including over one lakh Gorkhas. The Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP), a national social organization representing Gorkhas, has warmly welcomed this resolution.
Nanda Kirati Dewan, General Secretary of the BGP’s Assam State Committee, expressed his appreciation for the MHA’s decision. He highlighted the organization’s persistent efforts, spanning over five years, in addressing the issue with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the Registrar General of India (RGI), and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Dewan acknowledged the concerted efforts of both ruling and opposition MPs in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha who raised the issue on behalf of the Gorkha community. He gave special recognition to Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, for his sustained advocacy.
Moreover, the BGP lauded the Assam Gorkha Sammelan, the parent Gorkha organization in the state, for its vital role in data collection and collaboration with various agencies.
The issue stemmed from the capturing of biometrics by UIDAI during the NRC process, which delayed the issuance of Aadhar cards, thereby affecting basic rights such as access to the Public Distribution System (PDS), rural banking, financial inclusion, Direct Benefit Transfers, college admissions, and healthcare. It also hindered the ability to open bank accounts, join the defense services, and obtain government employment, police verification, and various essential documents such as passports and SIM cards.
The BGP expressed gratitude to the Assam Government, particularly thanking Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his announcement on Wednesday regarding the release of Aadhar cards to over 9.35 lakh residents of the state.
This resolution marks a significant step in alleviating the difficulties faced by the citizens and restoring their basic rights.
