Bharat Biotech Launches New Oral Cholera Vaccine Amid Global Shortage

Bharat Biotech International (BBIL) has introduced a new oral cholera vaccine (OCV) named HILLCHOL, addressing the global scarcity of OCVs in the face of rising cholera cases worldwide. The vaccine was developed in collaboration with Hilleman Laboratories, a Singapore-based vaccine research organization.
Cholera incidences and fatalities have been increasingly significant, especially since 2021, with 824,479 cases and 5,900 deaths reported across 31 countries from early 2023 to March 2024 alone. With only one current global OCV manufacturer, there has been an annual shortfall of approximately 40 million doses. Bharat Biotech aims to mitigate this deficit with their Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar facilities capable of producing up to 200 million doses annually.
HILLCHOL is administered orally on Day 0 and Day 14 and is suitable for individuals over one year old. It comes in a single-dose respule and requires storage between +2°C and +8°C. The vaccine is available in a mono-multidose format.
"Vaccines provide the best intervention to prevent, limit, and control cholera outbreaks. HILLCHOL is a success story of partnership leading to public health solutions. Our new manufacturing facilities will significantly enhance our production capacity, enabling us to combat cholera globally," stated Krishna Ella, executive chairman of Bharat Biotech. Ella also expressed gratitude to the CDSCO, the Government of India, and WHO for their regulatory support.
The launch of HILLCHOL aligns with the Global Task Force on Cholera Control’s (GTFCC) aim to reduce cholera-related deaths by 90% by 2030. The vaccine’s development was the result of collaborative efforts between Hilleman Laboratories, Bharat Biotech, the University of Gothenburg, and Gotovax AB.
