Urgent Crisis: Persistent Dhaleswari River Flooding Delays Vital Assam-Mizoram Railway Track Restoration
The Northeast Frontier Railways (NFR) has declared that the restoration of the critical interstate railway track connecting Assam and Mizoram will only commence once the water levels in the Dhaleswari River recede to safe levels. Persistent heavy rainfall has caused these water levels to rise alarmingly, leading to significant soil erosion and destabilizing the track.
The severe weather conditions have severely disrupted this essential railway service, which plays a key role in connecting the two states. The damage, occurring near Killarbak, some 60 kilometers from Hailakandi town, has rendered the track unsafe for train operations. In light of the erosion damage, NFR has diverted the passenger train service that usually runs between Bairabi in Mizoram and Silchar via Hailakandi. The altered route now only covers the stretch between Silchar and Jamira in Hailakandi, a small town situated 23 kilometers from Bairabi.
Consequently, passengers traveling towards Mizoram must now disembark at Jamira and continue their journey by bus. This arrangement has resulted in considerable inconvenience for travelers, who now face added travel time and complexity. The erosion not only washed away the soil underpinning the rail track but also compromised its integrity, necessitating a halt in rail operations until comprehensive restoration can be undertaken.
NFR officials have prioritized safety and are monitoring the situation closely. They have assured the public that restoration efforts will begin promptly as soon as conditions permit. However, the timeline for the resumption of normal services remains uncertain until the Dhaleswari River’s water levels decline sufficiently.
This development has highlighted the impact of natural disasters on essential infrastructure, underscoring the need for robust contingency planning to mitigate such disruptions in the future.
