Telegram, the popular messaging app, issued a strong defense of its founder Pavel Durov following his arrest at a Paris airport on Saturday. In a statement on Sunday, the company criticized the idea that a platform’s owner should be held responsible for its misuse, emphasizing that Durov “has nothing to hide.” Telegram assured that it complies with EU laws, particularly the Digital Services Act, and that its moderation standards are continuously improving.
The company further highlighted that Durov frequently travels to Europe and dismissed claims that he or the platform could be blamed for its abuse as “absurd.” Telegram expressed hope for a quick resolution to the situation, reiterating its support for Durov.
Durov, a wealthy innovator and CEO of Telegram, was detained at Le Bourget Airport near Paris. Reports indicate he arrived in France via a private aircraft. Subsequently, French judicial authorities extended his detention, stemming from alleged offenses tied to the controversial messaging app. The detention can last up to 96 hours, after which a judge will decide whether to release Durov or press charges, potentially leading to further custody.
An arrest warrant has been issued as authorities probe into alleged insufficient content moderation on Telegram, which police claim has facilitated criminal activities on the platform. Telegram maintains that its moderation practices align with industry standards and are improving steadily.
