Justice for the Victim: Prohibitory Orders Near RG Kar Hospital Extended to August 31 in Heartbreaking Kolkata Rape-Murder Case
Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) Deputy Inspector General (DIG) K Pratap Singh, alongside police and security personnel, was deployed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Supreme Court’s orders. This action was taken amid ongoing protests following the alleged sexual assault and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the hospital.
Simultaneously, Kolkata Police have extended prohibitory orders around the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for an additional week, effective until August 31. Originally imposed on August 18, these orders prohibit meetings and gatherings of more than five people within the designated area. Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal confirmed on August 24, 2024, the imposition of Section 163 (2) of the BNSS, covering regions from Belgachia Road-J K Mitra Crossing to segments of the Shyambazar five-point crossing in North Kolkata.
The extension aims to prevent disturbances and maintain peace in the area, which has been disrupted due to public unrest concerning the recent tragic incident involving the woman doctor. The order underscores that violators of these prohibitions will face penalties under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The measures reflect the authorities’ stringent steps to manage the situation and ensure stability as the investigation progresses.
