Exciting New 16.725 km Track Between Bhairabi & Hortoki in Mizoram Approved for Train Operations: A Game-Changer for Connectivity!
Guwahati, Aug 24: Train operations have been greenlit on the newly established track between Bhairabi and Hortoki, a segment of the Bhairabi-Sairang New Line Railway Project designed to integrate Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, into the railway network.
The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Sumeet Singhal, officially authorized the running of both freight and passenger trains on this 16.725 km broad gauge line on Thursday, as per an official statement released on Friday. This new line comprises four sections: Bhairabi-Hortoki, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, and Mualkhang-Sairang. Following a thorough inspection and speed trial, the CRS has sanctioned operations at a maximum speed of 75 km per hour. Notably, the Bhairabi-Hortoki section is engineered to support speeds up to 100 km per hour on the main line and 30 km per hour on loop lines.
Enhanced safety measures include a fibre-optic communication system, VHF systems for station communication, electronic interlocking, and a MACL signal system. The Bhairabi-Sairang project involves navigating tough terrain, requiring the construction of numerous tunnels and bridges, with total tunnel lengths amounting to 12,853 meters, 55 major bridges, and 89 minor bridges upon completion.
This project not only aims to connect Mizoram with India but also with neighboring countries Myanmar and Bangladesh, potentially integrating into the Trans-Asian Railway network and the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project. Additionally, it is expected to significantly elevate Mizoram’s tourism prospects, enhancing access to its scenic landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and biodiversity.
The successful completion of this railway project marks a significant step in infrastructural development for the northeastern state, promising economic growth and better connectivity within the region and beyond.
