Empowering Change: Meghalaya TMC Champions Lone Woman MDC from Garo Hills for Gambegre Bypolls
Meghalaya’s All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced its candidate for the upcoming Gambegre bypolls. The party will field Sadhiarani M Sangma, the lone woman member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and wife of former Rangsakona legislator Zenith M Sangma. This decision followed discussions led by TMC President Charles Pyngrope and the election committee.
The bypolls are required after Congress leader Saleng A Sangma resigned to become Tura MP. Former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has accused the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) of misusing state resources to influence the election, including distributing CGI sheets to local families.
Mukul Sangma expressed concerns that the state machinery, including the chief minister, is unduly focused on the Gambegre constituency. Despite these allegations, Sangma assured that the TMC is prepared to contest vigorously and will not allow any illegal activities to go unchecked.
He emphasized the party’s commitment to addressing illegalities and ensuring fair implementation of government schemes, criticizing the NPP for what he perceives as rampant manipulation and nepotism. Sangma also questioned whether the Lokayukta, an anti-corruption ombudsman, is functioning as mandated, suggesting that the current government is undermining legal processes.
The TMC aims to finalize and announce Sadhiarani M Sangma’s candidacy soon, with the party working intensively at the grassroots level to secure the Gambegre seat.
