Unleashing Luxury: Why Private Flights Are Skyrocketing in India Like Never Before
The Rise of Private Charters: Modern Luxuries in Air Travel
A few years ago, Captain Vinod, a veteran pilot with Deccan Charters, embarked on an extraordinary flight to Punjab. He was transporting a newlywed couple from their wedding venue in a helicopter, a modern twist on the traditional “vidaai” ceremony. "What used to be conducted in palanquins and then cars is now done in private jets and helicopters," remarked Vinod, a 59-year-old Indian Army veteran.
Vinod, with 17 years of experience as a commercial helicopter pilot, has witnessed various unique requests, including a 30-minute flight chartered for a marriage proposal. This marked only the beginning of an industry boom. Data from the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) shows a significant surge in Air Operator Permits (AOPs) in the last four years, accounting for 36% of India’s total non-scheduled operators.
Sachit Wadhwa, co-founder of BookMyCharters, notes that the post-pandemic period brought an influx of new clients, ranging from CEOs to doctors, as commercial flights ceased operations. Time efficiency, connectivity, and exclusivity have fueled this industry’s growth. Notably, pet-friendly charters for destination weddings and international travels have become a trend.
Wadhwa also highlights the cost diversity of private flights, ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹8 lakh per hour, dependent on the aircraft and travel requirements. Meanwhile, Vinod reveals that political seasons see high bookings of private jets and helicopters.
The global business jet market, valued at over $24 billion in 2020, is projected to reach $37 billion by 2028. Raaghav Belavadi of Hype Luxury, an aggregator, confirms the burgeoning demand, with quotes increasing from five to six per month to a hundred.
During the pandemic, non-scheduled aircraft played a crucial role, transporting vaccines and organs across India. Vinod recalls the satisfaction of rescuing tourists stranded in the Uttarakhand Hills, underscoring the vital services these flights can offer in emergencies.
