Three Kuki MLAs Oppose "Kuki-Zo" Term, Advocate for Inclusive Identity
In Manipur, three of the ten Kuki MLAs have voiced their opposition to the use of the term "Kuki-Zo" for their community, advocating instead for a more inclusive nomenclature. Vungzagin Valte, representing Thanlon Assembly Constituency, Ngursanglur Sanate from Tipaimukh Assembly Constituency, and LM Khaute, a former Director-General of Police, have released statements denouncing the term "Kuki-Zo."
Valte, who identifies as Paite Scheduled Tribe of the "Zomi" community, argues that "Zomi" best represents the historical, cultural, and social identities of his people. He emphasized that "Kuki-Zo" is non-inclusive and disregards the unique identities of the different tribes in his constituency. Valte highlighted his commitment to the integrity and collective identity of the Zomi, Kuki, and Hmar communities, calling for a terminology that respects the individuality and dignity of all groups.
Sanate also affirmed his stance through a press release, committing to the "Kuki-Zomi-Hmar" nomenclature. He explicitly stated that he has never and will never endorse any term that excludes the "Hmar" identity. Sanate’s statement addresses the ongoing debate over proper terminology and emphasizes his dedication to preserving the identities of all communities within the Pherzawl District.
LM Khaute, leveraging his experience as a former high-ranking police official and current MLA, argued for the necessity of an inclusive terminology. He pointed out that "Kuki-Zomi-Hmar" has been consistently used in previous statements by the ten Kuki MLAs. Khaute rejected any attempts to impose an exclusionary label on the diverse community, emphasizing his endeavor to ensure suitable terminology that accurately reflects their collective identity.
The three MLAs collectively underscore the importance of an inclusive term that honors the diversity within their communities while advocating for a shared yet distinct identity, reflecting their rich and unique heritages.
