New Delhi, August 22 (IANS): In the rapidly evolving field of radiology, cutting-edge advancements in generative AI models, such as Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT), have shown promise as diagnostic tools. However, thorough evaluations are essential to ensure their accuracy and optimal application.
A team from Osaka Metropolitan University’s Graduate School of Medicine, led by Dr. Daisuke Horiuchi and Associate Professor Daiju Ueda, conducted a study to compare the diagnostic accuracy of ChatGPT against human radiologists. The study examined 106 musculoskeletal radiology cases, incorporating patient medical histories, images, and imaging findings.
The diagnostic performance was assessed using two versions of the AI model: GPT-4 and GPT-4 with vision (GPT-4V). These were pitted against both a radiology resident and a board-certified radiologist. The findings revealed that GPT-4 outperformed GPT-4V and matched the diagnostic accuracy of the radiology resident, though it still fell short when compared to the board-certified radiologist’s expertise.
Dr. Horiuchi commented on the results, noting, “While the results of this study indicate that ChatGPT may be useful for diagnostic imaging, its accuracy cannot compare to a board-certified radiologist. Additionally, this study suggests that its performance as a diagnostic tool must be fully understood before it can be used.”
He also highlighted the rapid progress in generative AI, suggesting its eventual role as an auxiliary tool in diagnostic imaging. The research, published in the journal European Radiology, underscores both the potential and limitations of generative AI in medical diagnostics, stressing the necessity for further research before it can see widespread clinical use.
