OpenAI is set to unveil a new customization feature for its advanced AI model, GPT-4o, allowing corporate clients to fine-tune the AI using their specific company data. This move aims to provide businesses with tailored AI solutions amid increasing competition and pressure to show tangible returns on AI investments.
Launching on Tuesday, this feature, known as fine-tuning in the AI sector, enables models to be trained with additional task or subject-specific information. For instance, a skateboard manufacturer could customize an AI model to serve as an expert customer service chatbot, addressing queries about wheel maintenance and board care.
This new capability marks a first for the flagship GPT-4o model, which previously did not support fine-tuning. While other streamlined and cost-effective versions, such as GPT-4o mini, have offered customization, this expansion aims to simplify the process for users looking to tweak the most powerful AI model directly with OpenAI, bypassing the need for third-party services.
According to Olivier Godement, OpenAI’s head of product for the API, the company is dedicated to minimizing the effort required for customers to get started. "We’ve been extremely focused on lowering the bar, the friction, the amount of work it takes to get started," Godement stated.
To utilize this feature, clients will need to upload their data to OpenAI’s servers, with the training process generally taking one to two hours, as explained by John Allard, an OpenAI software engineer specializing in customization. Initially, the fine-tuning will be limited to text-based data, excluding images or other content at this stage.
