Urgent Outcry: Docs Rally in Grief, Black Ribbons Protest at RG Kar over Kolkata Rape-Murder Tragedy LIVE
Doctors and citizens are protesting against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Women across Kolkata and West Bengal organized night protests, likening it to the ‘Reclaim the Night’ campaign, braving intermittent rains while chanting “We want justice.” Prominent Bengali cinema figures, including directors Arindam Sil, Kaushik Ganguly, and actress Churni Ganguly, joined the protests, alongside resident doctors in Delhi who held a candlelight march.
Significant public pressure mounts on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding their handling of the case. The victim’s parents criticized the government’s attempt to suppress the outcry. The CBI has taken over the investigation from Kolkata police, conducting 3D laser mapping of the crime scene and psychological testing of the main suspect. The Supreme Court has also taken suo motu cognizance of the incident, with hearings scheduled.
Political responses varied, with Congress leader Pawan Khera demanding sensitive responses to the family’s concerns, and TMC leaders divided over the police’s role. Protests erupted in various cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Puducherry, with demonstrators demanding better security for doctors. The AIIMS resident doctors’ association wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the enactment of a central law to protect healthcare workers.
The victim’s father expressed dissatisfaction with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s handling, while allegations of corruption and unethical practices emerged against Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of the hospital. Prohibitory orders were issued around the hospital to prevent further unrest, as investigations continue.
