Kuwait City, August 19 (IANS) – External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar’s official visit to Kuwait on Sunday included a significant interaction with the Indian community and representatives of various professional and community associations. Following the meeting, he took to social media platform X, praising the vibrant Indian community’s achievements and their contributions to strengthening India-Kuwait relations.
The Ministry of External Affairs further elaborated on the visit in a press release, highlighting the broad engagement with prominent Indian community members and association representatives in Kuwait. It underscored the role of the Indian community as a "living bridge" between the two nations.
During his one-day visit, EAM Jaishankar also met Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah and Prime Minister Sheikh Muhammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah. These discussions allowed both sides to review various aspects of bilateral relations, including politics, trade, investment, energy, security, culture, consular, and people-to-people connections.
Reflecting on historical ties, it’s notable that India and Kuwait have long shared friendly relations based on deep trade ties. Before 1961, the Indian rupee was the legal tender in Kuwait. The country’s economy was heavily reliant on maritime activities like shipbuilding, pearl diving, fishing, and voyages to India for trade in goods such as dates, Arabian horses, and pearls in exchange for wood, cereals, clothes, and spices.
EAM Jaishankar’s earlier visit to Kuwait in June 2021 further underscored the strong bilateral relationship when he met with the Prime Minister and delivered a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Amir of Kuwait. The ongoing engagements reflect the continued commitment of both nations to strengthen and deepen their multifaceted partnership.
