Shocking: X Forced to Cease Operations in Brazil ‘Effective Immediately’ Due to Censorship – Tech News
X to Halt Brazil Operations Citing "Censorship Orders" from Supreme Court Judge
In a dramatic turn of events, media platform X announced on Saturday it would immediately cease operations in Brazil, attributing the decision to "censorship orders" from Brazilian judge Alexandre de Moraes. The company, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, accused Moraes of making covert threats to arrest one of its legal representatives unless X complied with orders to remove specific content.
Despite this announcement, the X service remains accessible to Brazilian users. The platform’s confrontation with Brazil’s judiciary began earlier this year when Moraes demanded the blocking of accounts as part of an investigation into "digital militias" accused of disseminating fake news and hate speech during the administration of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Musk has openly criticized Moraes’ actions, calling the judge’s directives "unconstitutional." Following challenges by Musk, X’s representatives eventually informed Brazil’s Supreme Court of their intent to comply with the legal rulings. In April, X’s lawyers admitted to the court that operational faults had enabled some banned users to continue accessing the platform.
Brazil’s Supreme Court has not yet commented on the latest developments.
