Exciting Bureaucratic Revamp: Punya Salila Srivastava Takes Charge as Health Secretary, Rajesh Kumar Singh Named Defense Secretary
In a significant bureaucratic overhaul, senior official Punya Salila Srivastava was appointed as the new health secretary on Friday. As per the personnel ministry’s order, Srivastava, currently serving as a special secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), will initially assume the role of Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Department of Health and Family Welfare. She is slated to succeed outgoing health secretary Apurva Chandra, who retires on September 30.
Rajesh Kumar Singh, presently the Secretary for the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, will take over as the new Defence Secretary. He will start as OSD in the Defence Ministry before replacing Aramane Giridhar, who retires on October 31, 2024.
Further appointments include Katikithala Srinivas, the current Minority Affairs Secretary, who will be the new Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary. Senior bureaucrat Deepti Umashankar has been assigned as the new Secretary to the President of India. Vivek Joshi, the current Financial Services Secretary, will step into the role of Secretary in the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Nagaraju Maddirala, an additional secretary in the Coal Ministry, will replace Joshi as the next Financial Services Secretary.
On August 10, Finance Secretary T.V. Somanathan was appointed as the new Cabinet Secretary for a term of two years, succeeding Rajiv Gauba, who completes his unprecedented five-year term by the end of this month. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved Somanathan’s tenure starting on August 30, according to the personnel ministry’s statement.
Additionally, the government is expected to name a new Union Home Secretary soon, as incumbent Ajay Kumar Bhalla concludes his five-year term on August 22.
This sweeping reshuffle reflects the government’s strategic realignment of top bureaucratic positions to ensure effective governance and continued policy implementation.
