Heartfelt Tribute: Ex-National Workers Powerfully Commemorate 78th Naga Independence Day in Mokokchung
Ex-national workers from Longkhum, Mangmetong, Alichen, and Satsü celebrated the 78th Naga Independence Day on August 14 at the Lenten Riju in Mangmetong village. The event featured Major General Ramkathaing, Steering Executive Member of the NSCN (IM), as the chief guest. In his address, he emphasized the significance of Naga Independence Day, portraying it as a symbol of Naga solidarity, identity, sovereignty, and nationality. He cautioned against the loss of Naga identity if a plebiscite is not pursued.
Ramkathaing discussed the historical ties between the Naga National Council (NNC) and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN), and highlighted the sacrifices of forefathers in the quest for a unified and sovereign Naga nation. He reaffirmed the NSCN’s refusal to accept the Indian Constitution and declared that they would not surrender until India honors its commitments. He also expressed apprehension about efforts to distort the concept of the Naga nation, warning of a bleak future if such attempts continue. Other speakers, including leaders from Longkhum, Mangmetong, Alichen, and Satsü, also paid tribute to those who have served and sacrificed for the Naga Nation.
The event began with a flag hoisting ceremony, during which a speech by Ato Kilonser Th. Muivah commemorating the 78th Naga Independence Day was read aloud.
Separately, the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) observed Naga Independence Day at their office premises. Advocate B.L Namo, serving as the guest speaker, recounted the Naga political struggle from the British era to the present. He highlighted significant events such as the formation of the Naga Club in 1918, the 1929 memorandum to the British, and the declaration of Naga independence on August 14, 1947. Namo also underscored the steadfastness of Naga leaders like AZ Phizo in rejecting Indian government offers, emphasizing their commitment to Naga sovereignty. The event saw participation from members of the Ao Senden, Watsü Mungdang, and office bearers from all six ranges of the Ao Students’ Conference.
These observances reflect the sustained commitment of the Nagas to their identity and sovereignty, honoring their rich history and the sacrifices made for their cause.
