Justice for Kolkata Doctor’s Tragic Rape-Murder: High Court Orders CBI Probe into RG Kar Medical College Nightmare
Kolkata: CBI Steps in After Calcutta High Court Orders Probe into Doctor’s Rape-Murder
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation into the gruesome rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This development came shortly after the Calcutta High Court ordered the probe today, citing significant deficiencies in the hospital’s response. The victim was discovered in the seminar hall with her clothes disheveled and multiple injuries on her body, prompting her family to demand an independent investigation to avoid evidence tampering.
The court criticized Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the state-run college, for his lack of proactiveness in the incident. It underscored the urgency of relieving him from administrative duties and sending him on leave. Surprisingly, Dr. Ghosh resigned in response to social media backlash but was quickly reassigned as Principal of Calcutta National Medical College, sparking extensive protests among doctors.
The court reproached the state government for hastily reassigning Dr. Ghosh, suggesting that the urgency of his new appointment could impede a fair investigation. The high court emphasized the necessity of recording Dr. Ghosh’s statement, highlighting that he should not be shielded in any way. The hospital administration’s failure to support the victim’s family was also noted, raising concerns about potential evidence tampering.
Despite formally giving the state police more time, the high court expressed doubts about significant progress in the investigation. "Even after five days, notable conclusions are missing," the court stated, thus justifying the immediate transfer of the case to the CBI. Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had set a Sunday deadline for Kolkata Police to complete their probe, with a CBI investigation as an alternative if requested by the victim’s family. Opposition parties, led by the BJP, had also called for a central agency probe, cautioning against potential evidence tampering by state authorities.
