
Relentless Rajasthan Rains: Heartfelt Struggle as Life Disrupted in Numerous Districts
The Pali-Jodhpur railway track was submerged following heavy rainfall on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, affecting the regular life in various districts of Rajasthan, including Jaipur. Continuous rains recorded 118 mm of rain in Jaipur over the last 24 hours, leading to schools being closed in multiple districts such as Bharatpur, Karauli, Dausa, and Sawai Madhopur.
The state capital experienced intermittent rains since Sunday, August 11, 2024, with heavy downpours starting at around 5 a.m. on Monday and continuing till 9 a.m., causing flooding in low-lying areas and confining residents to their homes. In response to the weather conditions, the Education Department declared a holiday for schools in several districts, including Jaipur.
Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma convened a meeting on Sunday, August 11, 2024, instructing senior officials to prioritize rescue operations and provide prompt relief efforts in affected regions. Tragically, at least 19 fatalities were reported due to rain-related incidents across the state.
The Meteorological Centre in Jaipur noted ongoing rains and predicted that the monsoon would remain active for the forthcoming days, impacting areas in the Jaipur, Bharatpur, Ajmer, and Kota divisions of eastern Rajasthan, with heavy to very heavy rainfall anticipated. Similarly, moderate to heavy rains were forecasted for most of the Bikaner division in western Rajasthan.
From June 1 to August 12, Rajasthan received 40% more rainfall than usual, recording 397.8 mm against the normal 283.9 mm, per the Meteorological Department. Western Rajasthan saw a 56% increase, while eastern Rajasthan experienced a 31% rise in precipitation. Except for Dungarpur and Banswara, all districts have reported normal to excess rainfall amounts.
