Justice for Kolkata Doctor: CM Mamata Vows CBI Handover if Police Fail to Crack Rape-Murder Case by August 18
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has set a seven-day deadline for the police to make significant progress in the investigation of a doctor’s alleged rape and murder at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. If the police cannot solve the case by Sunday, she will hand over the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), citing the possible involvement of insiders.
The Chief Minister’s directive followed a meeting with the victim’s family. Banerjee expressed surprise at the incident occurring despite the presence of nurses and security personnel. She has since removed those in crucial positions, including the hospital’s principal and medical superintendent. Earlier, Principal Sandip Ghosh resigned, and Medical Superintendent Sanjay Vasistha was also dismissed from his post.
On Saturday, Kolkata Police arrested a civic police volunteer linked to the crime, as CCTV footage had placed him near the scene. Post-mortem findings confirmed signs of sexual assault. However, speculation about additional perpetrators was dismissed by Police Commissioner Vinnet Kumar Goyal.
The brutal crime has led to widespread protests among junior doctors and a strike endorsed by the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association of India (FORDA). Meanwhile, a National Commission for Women (NCW) team has arrived in Kolkata to investigate.
The incident has ignited political tensions, with Opposition parties, including the Congress and BJP, criticizing the Trinamool Congress government. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called the incident “heartbreaking” and urged for immediate action to ensure justice. Conversely, BJP leader Amit Malviya accused Banerjee of attempting to obscure the truth and protect influential parties involved.
As the investigation continues, the Chief Minister’s deadline looms, and all eyes are on the police to deliver timely results, while the victim’s family and protesting doctors await justice.
