Crucial Meeting Today: Meghalaya Government and Harijan Committee Tackle Pressing Relocation Issue
The long-awaited meeting between the Meghalaya government and the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) is set to take place on August 10, according to media reports. This crucial meeting aims to address the prolonged issue of relocating 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong, a matter that has been pending for an extended period.
Previously, the state government had allocated two months to the Harijan Panchayat Committee to appoint a new president who would lead the discussions on the relocation process. The scheduling of this meeting marks a significant step towards resolving a dispute that has been lingering for quite some time.
On June 13, the Meghalaya High Court extended the deadline for these deliberations by six weeks, acknowledging ongoing settlement discussions between the legal representatives of both parties. Justice W Diengdoh, who passed the order, noted that the parties requested additional time, expressing optimism about reaching a positive agreement that could potentially eliminate the need for further court intervention.
As both sides prepare for the upcoming meeting, there is cautious optimism that a resolution may be within reach, allowing the relocation efforts to move forward and potentially bringing closure to a longstanding issue affecting numerous families in Meghalaya.
