PMC Health Dept. Audits Four Suspected Zika Deaths Amidst Rise in Cases

Pune, Aug 09, 2024 — The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) health department has referred details of four suspected Zika virus-related deaths to the Death Audit Committee (DAC) for thorough investigation. The announcement came as the city reported 73 Zika-positive cases.

The deaths, which occurred between July 14 and 22, involved elderly patients with pre-existing health conditions. These individuals include a 76-year-old man from Warje, a 72-year-old man from Kharadi, a 68-year-old man from Kothrud, and a 78-year-old man from Baner, all of whom were receiving treatment at private hospitals.

Dr. Suryakant Deokar, PMC assistant health officer, stated, "The committee, guided by Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, joint director of health services and state head for the vector-borne disease control programme, will conduct the audit to determine the exact causes of death and any other contributing health issues."

Dr. Deokar emphasized the seriousness of Zika virus infections, particularly for pregnant women, as it can impact fetal development. While most Zika cases are either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, precautions remain crucial. The virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, which also transmits diseases like dengue and chikungunya.

The DAC’s findings will be instrumental in understanding the complexities surrounding these deaths and in guiding future public health responses. The PMC continues to urge citizens to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures against mosquito bites to curb the spread of the virus.
