Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, made a statement outside the U.S. Capitol about his willingness to testify publicly before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee on December 13, 2023. This development comes as he faces serious legal troubles.
Federal prosecutors have accused Hunter Biden of accepting payments from Romanian businessman Gabriel Popoviciu, identified as “G.P.” in court filings, who allegedly aimed to influence U.S. government actions regarding a Romanian criminal investigation. These allegations surfaced in a court filing in Los Angeles, where Hunter Biden faces a scheduled trial on September 9 for tax evasion charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
ABC News reported that Hunter Biden’s involvement with Popoviciu began in late 2015 while Joe Biden was serving as Vice President. Prosecutors plan to present evidence indicating that Biden and an associate were paid by a foreign principal attempting to influence U.S. policy and public opinion. This, they say, was in an effort to compel the U.S. to intervene in the Romanian investigation against Popoviciu.
In the filing, prosecutors noted Hunter Biden’s attempts to conceal the true nature of his work for Popoviciu, expressing concerns over potential political ramifications for his father. Popoviciu faced bribery charges in Romania at the time.
Hunter Biden also faces felony and misdemeanor charges for failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019, and for tax evasion related to false returns filed in 2018. In addition, he was convicted in June by a Delaware jury for lying about illegal drug use when purchasing a handgun in 2018. Sentencing for this conviction is still pending.
Both Hunter Biden’s legal team and prosecutors declined to comment on the latest accusations, and the White House also refrained from issuing a statement. Efforts to reach Popoviciu for comment were unsuccessful.
