Tripura Panchayat Elections Witness Over 30% Voter Turnout by Noon
The three-tier Panchayat elections in Tripura commenced at 7 AM today, registering over 30% voter turnout by 12 PM. According to an official from the Tripura State Election Commission, the elections involve a total of 6,909 seats across Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, and Zila Parishads.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already secured 4,805 seats uncontested, including 6,370 in Gram Panchayats, 423 in Panchayat Samitis, and 116 in Zila Parishads. With a total of 12,94,153 eligible voters—comprising 6,58,445 males, 6,35,597 females, and 11 others—the elections are being conducted at 2,650 polling stations.
"The election is currently underway for 2,102 seats. Voting began at 7 AM and by 10 AM, a voter turnout of 24.97% was recorded. We are in the process of gathering further data," stated the election commission official.
Despite some sporadic incidents, the administration has assured that they were swiftly addressed by security and Returning officers. To ensure a smooth electoral process, stringent security measures have been implemented. Over 10,000 state security forces, including Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and 30 companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), have been deployed.
"The state has taken robust security measures to guarantee peaceful voting. Personnel have been instructed to report any issues immediately. The deployment of state security and CAPF forces underscores our commitment to a peaceful electoral process," the official added.
In other news, BSF Director General reviewed the operational readiness along the Tripura border amidst political unrest in Bangladesh, underscoring the region’s heightened state of vigilance.
