Statue of Khasi Freedom Fighter U Tirot Sing Syiem Destroyed in Bangladesh Unrest

Shillong: In a tragic incident at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a mob destroyed the statue of U Tirot Sing Syiem, a revered Khasi freedom fighter. This act of vandalism has deeply saddened the people of Meghalaya.

A widely circulated video shows the IGCC building extensively damaged, with the statue reduced to just its pedestal and nameplate. Reports indicate that the building was set ablaze by miscreants amidst large-scale violent protests in the country.

The unrest, which began in June, was initially sparked by a controversial reservation policy for the descendants of the veterans of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. However, by July, the protests had escalated dramatically, leading to violent confrontations at Dhaka University. These clashes resulted in fatalities and further intensified the nationwide unrest.

Since then, the violence has spread, resulting in over 300 deaths across Bangladesh. The situation reached a peak on August 5, forcing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to India. Subsequently, the Bangladeshi Army took control to form an interim government.

Protestors also stormed Hasina’s residence, looting it and continuing their vandalism in various parts of Dhaka, including setting fire to the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum.

The IGCC, run by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), has been a significant venue for promoting cultural ties between India and Bangladesh. U Tirot Sing Syiem’s statue, unveiled on February 16, 2024, along with thematic murals and the renamed U Tirot Sing Library, commemorated his legacy and his death under house arrest in Dhaka on July 17, 1835, while imprisoned by the British Raj.

This incident underscores the chaotic state of affairs in Bangladesh, as the nation grapples with severe unrest and widespread destruction.
