Pinaki Nath’s Return to Bangladesh Hinges on Political Stability

Kolkata’s own Pinaki Nath, a student of photography at Dhaka’s esteemed Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, found himself back home during a semester break when unrest erupted in Bangladesh. Nath was scheduled to return on July 16, but the escalating turmoil made it too dangerous to go back. His deep concern for his Bangladeshi friends, who were instrumental during his challenging times, especially when he was hospitalized with dengue in September 2022, fuels his eagerness to return.

The friendships formed over his four-year stay have made his experience in Dhaka unforgettable. Nath underscores the solidarity he feels with the protesting students who played a pivotal role in the recent mass uprising against an autocratic regime. The protests were not merely about job reservations for descendants of the Liberation War veterans but were propelled by broader discontent with the government, including allegations of election rigging and economic hardships.

Nath notes that Indian students, including himself, are often given preferential treatment in Bangladesh compared to even the local students. His own experiences reflect this: expedited visa processes and logistical favors were common. Nath believes the recent upheaval will significantly redefine how students are treated in Bangladesh, given their critical role in the protests.

Despite the dangers he’s faced, including the recent violent crackdown on student protesters which claimed the lives of some, including his journalist friend Priyo, Nath remains undeterred. He stays in close contact with his Dhaka friends and closely monitors the political climate, which will ultimately determine his return to complete his studies.

“I want to go back; I’m not scared. The only fear I had was during the recent violence when students’ lives were lost,” says Nath. His story is a testament to the resilience of students in tumultuous times and the power of cross-border friendships forged in adversity.
