Heartbreak at Paris Olympics: Vinesh Phogat Disqualified from 50kg Women’s Wrestling for Overweight
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the women’s 50kg wrestling category at the Paris Olympics for exceeding the weight limit by approximately 100 grams, according to recent reports. This disqualification has resulted in India losing a significant opportunity to compete for a gold medal in the event.
The Indian Olympic Association disclosed that Phogat was found to be slightly over the 50kg weight limit this morning, despite extensive efforts made by her team overnight to ensure she met the requirements. Consequently, she was ruled ineligible to compete.
In a statement, the association expressed that no further comments would be made on the issue and requested respect for Vinesh Phogat’s privacy during this time.
Vinesh Phogat had previously made history on August 6 by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the finals of an Olympic wrestling event. She earned her spot in the women’s 50kg final at the Paris 2024 Olympics after triumphing over Cuba’s Lopez Guzman.
This story is developing, and more updates are expected to follow.
