Stunning Demolition: Watch The Eight Iconic Cooling Towers of KTPS Power Units Reduced to Rubble
In a significant event on Monday, eight cooling towers from the decommissioned power generating units of the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station (KTPS) in Paloncha, Bhadradri Kothagudem district, were demolished using controlled implosion. These towers, standing between 100 to 115 metres tall, were dismantled under the guidance of experts from a Mumbai-based firm, with local administration ensuring safety measures were followed.
The cooling towers, constructed between 1966 and 1978, served eight power generating units that had a combined capacity of 720 MW. These units, featuring Japanese technology from the late 1960s, were phased out a few years ago as per the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) regulations, having exceeded their useful life.
In response to growing electricity demands, Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Limited (TSGenco) introduced an 800-MW supercritical coal-fired thermal power plant at the KTPS site in 2018. This addition boosted the current generation capacity of KTPS to 1800 MW, comprising units from stages V, VI, and VII.
Kothagudem MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao emphasized the necessity of establishing two new 800-MW supercritical thermal power plants at the KTPS location. He suggested utilizing the now-vacant site of the demolished cooling towers for this purpose. Rao highlighted Paloncha’s strategic advantage due to its proximity to the coal-rich Kothagudem area and the abundant water resources from nearby Godavari and Kinnerasani rivers.
This transition marks a pivotal shift in the region’s power generation landscape, promising enhanced energy production capabilities to meet future demands.
