GUWAHATI: In a remarkable display of community spirit and generosity, a group of former Cotton College students from the 1998-2000 Higher Secondary batch organized a comprehensive Health Camp at Topar Pathar village in Chhaygaon block, Kamrup district. Operating under the banner of Cottonians HS 2000 Batch Welfare Society, this recently formed non-profit teamed up with the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) and hosted the event at Dr. Jakir Hussain High School.

The initiative saw collaboration from the school management, NSS Unit of Kalatoli Kathmi Anchalik Senior Secondary School, and the Topar Pathar Gaon Panchayat. A total of 14 specialised doctors, all alumni from the mentioned batch, provided free medical consultations to nearly 500 villagers. The attending physicians included Dr. Bikram Kumar Deka, Dr. Aparajita Goswami, and Dr. Nurjahan Begum, among others. They were supported with medications and necessary equipment by other fellow alumni who could not attend due to prior commitments.

Dr. Vaishali Sarma from the Welfare Society highlighted the group’s vision to address the healthcare needs of underprivileged communities, leveraging their shared medical background. The success of the event drew praise from the Director of Health Services, Dr. Umesh Phangcho, who commended the Cottonians’ effort in offering healthcare access to remote areas.

The Health Camp was made possible through meticulous coordination, credited to Kamrup Joint Director of Health Services Dr. Mahitosh Bannerjee, Chhaygaon Block Sub-Divisional Medical and Health Officer Dr. Chinmoy Kumar Das, and on-ground assistance from teacher Lokman Hekim.

Cottonians HS 2000 Batch Welfare Society, supported by nearly 400 former Cotton College students, plans to implement more such initiatives, promising a positive impact on society. The Health Camp not only facilitated vital medical assistance but also exemplified the enduring spirit of community service ingrained in the Cottonian family.
