Assam Cracks Down: Bold New Laws Target ‘Love Jihad’ and Inter-Religious Land Sales
Assam CM Announces Tough New Legislation on ‘Love Jihad’, Domicile Policy
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared that his administration intends to introduce a stringent law targeting ‘Love Jihad,’ with proposed penalties including life imprisonment for offenders. This significant announcement was made during an extended session of the Assam BJP’s state executive meeting in Guwahati.
“We will soon bring a law imposing life imprisonment for those involved in ‘Love Jihad’,” Sarma announced, underlining the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of Assamese people despite opposition efforts.
The proposed legislation is expected to be tabled during the upcoming monsoon session of the Assam assembly later this month.
In addition to this, Sarma unveiled plans for a new domicile policy that will restrict government job eligibility to those born in Assam. He criticized the previous Congress administration, alleging that 30 percent of Assam police jobs were allocated to a certain community, a claim which he said would be documented in a forthcoming publication.
“Our government is dedicated to prioritizing indigenous people in government job allocations,” Sarma affirmed. He also mentioned that the implementation of the promised “one lakh government jobs” would proceed once the finalized list is published.
Further focusing on resource allocation, the Chief Minister announced stringent measures to regulate land sales between different religious communities, stipulating that such transactions would now require his personal approval. He expressed concerns over land acquisitions by specific communities and assured that land would be restored to indigenous people. While outright bans on transactions between Hindus and Muslims cannot be enforced, the need for the CM’s clearance will add a layer of scrutiny. Additionally, lands belonging to indigenous and backward communities will no longer be transferable.
These announcements mark a significant policy shift aimed at securing the rights and resources of indigenous Assamese people, reflecting the BJP-led government’s renewed focus on local priorities.
