Naidu’s Bold Move: Removing Jagan’s Images from Land Boundary Markers and Passbooks to Restore Integrity

The N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP alliance, after winning the Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, repealed the Land Titling Act on 24 July, according to The Indian Express on 3 August. Additionally, the new state government is considering removing former Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy’s photographs from land boundary marker stones, which were installed during surveys in his tenure. The government is also set to replace Reddy’s images on lakhs of land ownership passbooks with the official state seal.

Chandrababu Naidu, addressing the Assembly, stated his government’s commitment to reissue the pattadar passbooks devoid of Reddy’s photos, criticizing the previous administration for wasting ₹15 crore on printing them. The TDP has already previewed the redesigned passbooks featuring only the state seal.

However, the TDP government faces a significant challenge with approximately 77 lakh boundary stones etched with Reddy’s image, anchored by revenue officials. This move has led to dissatisfaction among over 80 percent of land and property owners, prompting numerous litigations and resistance from farmers who began removing the stones.

Revenue Minister Anagani Satya Prasad announced that the government will organize ‘gram sabhas’ across over 7,000 villages to verify the accuracy of the land markings. If discrepancies are identified, a resurvey will be conducted in collaboration with the villagers. Satya Prasad also alleged that the previous Jagan government spent over ₹600 crore on procuring these boundary stones, which he claimed were custom-made for engraving the former CM’s image, despite lacking directives from the Centre to do so.
