AMC Directs Street Vendors to Vacate Non-Vending Zones Along Thuampui-Falkland Highway

AIZAWL: The Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) has issued a directive on Friday to immediately vacate all street vendors operating along the national highway between Thuampui and Falkland area. Vendors must either vacate their shops or cease selling fruits in non-vending zones by Saturday, with disciplinary measures to follow for non-compliance.

During a meeting on Friday, AMC officials led by Deputy Mayor R Thanglura and local council leaders from Thuampui discussed enforcement actions. Thanglura reaffirmed the AMC’s position, mandating the closure of illegal street vendor shops.

Additionally, individuals who have constructed unauthorized buildings for shops in the restricted zone are also required to dismantle such structures. Some vendors had reportedly erected Assam-type buildings along the prohibited area.

The deputy mayor emphasized that the AMC is committed to upholding the vending regulation act, ensuring that vendors operate within legal parameters. To address potential inconveniences, a collective discussion involving the AMC mayor, Thuampui local council, and the affected vendors will be arranged.

Approximately 30 families are currently selling fruits in the non-vending stretch between Thuampui and Falkland. Vendors have contested the directive, citing that they received permission from the AMC to open shops in 2020 and licenses were issued the following year. They also claim to pay a monthly rent of Rs 500 to the Thuampui local council for their shops, asserting that their livelihood depends on these sales.

This decision by the AMC highlights the ongoing effort to enforce vending regulations and manage public spaces effectively. Further discussions aim to mitigate the impact on those severely affected by the closures.
