Congress Unleashes Fury With Privilege Motion Against Amit Shah Amidst Wayanad Landslide Controversy
Congress Party Files Privilege Motion Against Amit Shah Over Wayanad Landslide Claims
On August 2, the Congress party lodged a privilege motion against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of misleading statements regarding advance warnings of landslides in Wayanad, Kerala. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh spearheaded the motion, challenging Shah’s assertion that the Kerala government received and neglected early warnings about the landslides.
During a Rajya Sabha session on July 31, Amit Shah stated that the Centre had issued warnings to Kerala on July 23, with subsequent alerts on July 24, 25, and 26, warning of severe rainfall and potential landslides. Shah’s comments drew criticism from Ramesh, who contended in the privilege notice that these claims were untrue and misleading to the House.
The notice asserted, "It is clear that the Union Home Minister misled the Rajya Sabha with emphatic statements on early warnings issued by the Union government which have been proven to be false. Misleading the House by a Minister or a Member constitutes a breach of privilege and contempt of the House."
The contested statements come in the wake of multiple devastating landslides in Wayanad, resulting in over 300 fatalities. Rescue operations continued amidst immense challenges posed by treacherous terrain, destroyed infrastructure, and inadequate heavy equipment, with over 200 individuals sustaining injuries.
This privileged motion underscores the tension between state and central authorities in managing disaster response and communication, bringing to focus the accountability and diligence expected from government officials in crisis scenarios.
