Tragic Outbreak: Japanese Encephalitis Claims 22 Lives at GMCH in Just Four Months
Guwahati Battles Rising Japanese Encephalitis Cases Amidst Monsoon Season
Guwahati is confronting a surge in Japanese Encephalitis (JE) cases, a mosquito-borne viral disease causing considerable concern in the region. Since April 1, 2024, to August 1, 2024, the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has recorded 90 JE cases, with 22 fatalities, according to Abhijit Sarma, Superintendent of GMCH.
Currently, 40 patients are receiving treatment for JE at GMCH. Sarma emphasized the importance of preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease. He advised using mosquito nets and repellents, particularly at night, and urged farmers to wear appropriate protective clothing when working in paddy fields. Additionally, he stressed the need for eliminating stagnant water around residential areas, which serve as mosquito breeding grounds.
With the monsoon season facilitating the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, these preventive measures are more critical than ever. The situation calls for heightened vigilance and community cooperation to mitigate the risks and safeguard public health.
