Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Launches Cashless Treatment Scheme for Road Accident Victims
GUWAHATI: The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced an innovative scheme to offer cashless treatment for victims of road accidents involving motor vehicles on any category of road. This initiative, spearheaded by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, will be executed on a pilot basis in Assam and Chandigarh.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Gadkari detailed that the scheme will be rolled out in collaboration with the National Health Authority (NHA). The eligible victims will receive Health Benefit Packages that cover trauma and polytrauma care at empanelled hospitals under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). The coverage extends up to a maximum of Rs 1.5 lakh for a period of seven days from the date of the accident.
The NHA, a body under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, will coordinate the scheme’s implementation. This will involve close collaboration with local police, empanelled hospitals, the State Health Agency, the National Informatics Centre, and the General Insurance Council.
This pilot project aims to provide crucial support to road accident victims regardless of where the accident occurs, adhering to the guidelines set forth by the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. The objective is to ensure immediate and efficient medical care, significantly reducing out-of-pocket expenses for victims and their families during such critical times.
With this scheme, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways emphasizes its commitment to enhancing road safety and extending necessary medical assistance promptly. Should the pilot prove successful, it could pave the way for a national rollout, potentially saving countless lives and providing much-needed relief to accident victims across India.
