Revolutionary Integration: Jadav Champions AYUSH Core Strategy in NHM for a Healthier Future
New Delhi, 30 Jul: The mainstreaming of Ayush is a pivotal strategy under the National Health Mission (NHM), aiming to deliver accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare, according to Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav. Integrating Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy (Ayush) practitioners into the healthcare system is supported under NHM, conditional on their co-location with existing district hospitals, community health centres (CHCs), and primary health centres (PHCs). Priority is given to remote CHCs and PHCs, Jadhav stated in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
Ayush has been integrated into 13,222 co-located facilities under NHM—comprising 6,612 PHCs, 3,035 CHCs, 469 district hospitals, 2,916 health facilities above sub-centre but below block level, and 190 health facilities other than CHCs at or above the block level but below the district level. As of 31 December last year, 27,421 Ayush doctors and 4,581 paramedics were positioned in various co-located health facilities, the minister highlighted.
In alignment with Ayushman Bharat, the government is aiding states in transforming sub-health centres and PHCs into health and wellness centres nationwide. These centres provide comprehensive primary healthcare, including preventive care and health promotion at the community level, advancing towards universal health coverage. Ayush medicine is also incorporated in the ASHA drug kits for managing primary conditions in communities, Jadhav noted.
The North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda & Folk Medicine Research in Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, has been established to promote folk healing practices and folk medicine. The institute focuses on documenting ethnomedicinal practices, scientifically validating folk claims, building capacity among traditional healers, and conducting awareness camps to popularize folk healing practices, the minister added. Additionally, the Quality Council of India certifies traditional community healthcare providers through a voluntary certification scheme.
This strategic integration signifies the government’s commitment to enhancing traditional medicine’s role in India’s healthcare framework. (PTI)
