Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Bold Prediction: Lovlina’s Golden Triumph Will Inspire a Nation
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confidently predicted that boxer Lovlina Borgohain will clinch a gold medal for India at the Paris Olympics. Borgohain, who earned a bronze in the 69 kg category at Tokyo 2020, has already demonstrated a promising start in Paris. Sarma, addressing reporters, expressed his faith in Borgohain, stating, “I think Lovlina will win gold for the country this time.”
Borgohain, seeded eighth, showcased her skill by defeating Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad 5-0 in the women’s 75 kg round of 16, highlighting her strong defensive techniques and effective counterattacks.
In other sports news, shooter Manu Bhaker has bolstered India’s medal tally with a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event. Bhaker’s performance marks a significant recovery from equipment issues that affected her at the Tokyo Games. She has made history as the first Indian woman in two decades to reach an individual shooting final since Suma Shirur in 2004 and the first Indian to win two medals in a single Olympic event.
Teaming up with Sarabjot Singh, Bhaker added another bronze to her collection in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, overcoming South Korea’s Lee Wonho and Oh Ye Jin 16-10. Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda commended the Haryana-born shooters, particularly noting Bhaker’s determined pre-Olympic mindset.
Looking ahead, Bhaker has another opportunity to expand her medal count in the 25m pistol event, scheduled for August 2.
