Game-Changer! Boeing Appoints Visionary Leader Kelly Ortberg as New CEO, Replacing Dave Calhoun
Boeing has announced that Robert “Kelly” Ortberg will succeed Dave Calhoun as CEO, starting August 8. Ortberg, 64, is a veteran of the aerospace sector, having previously led Rockwell Collins, which later became Collins Aerospace, now part of RTX. His tenure started after his retirement in 2021. Ortberg’s appointment comes amid Boeing’s ongoing struggles with safety, manufacturing crises, and persistent losses. He will also navigate heightened regulatory scrutiny, customer dissatisfaction due to delayed planes, and labor challenges, including the threat of a strike.
This leadership change aligns with Boeing’s wider shake-up this year; in March, it was announced Calhoun would step down, and the company has since replaced its chairman and head of commercial aircraft. The changes were exacerbated by a malfunction in a 737 Max 9, which brought renewed federal scrutiny. Boeing’s recently reported second-quarter results showed a greater-than-anticipated loss and a 15% sales decline.
Steven Mollenkopf, Boeing’s chairman, emphasized Ortberg’s qualifications, stating that the extensive search process confirmed his ability to lead the company through its next chapter. Ortberg will also join Boeing’s board.
