Morung Express News | Khelma, July 29, 2023

Four months after a devastating hailstorm struck Khelma village, the Nagaland Government has reportedly not extended any assistance, despite extensive damage to homes and the local health sub-centre. On March 26, the storm unleashed hailstones the size of eggs, puncturing roofs and causing widespread disruption. Residents of the village, located under Athibung sub-division in Peren district, recounted the unprecedented intensity of the storm.

During a visit by The Morung Express, the health sub-centre’s roof was observed to be riddled with large holes and severe slashes from the hailstones. Villagers lamented that the State Government has yet to visit the site or provide aid. James, a Khelma resident, shared, "We had to purchase new roofing materials ourselves since the state government hasn’t offered any assistance." He added that despite widespread images and videos of the damage, there has been no response, appealing to the government for help.

The storm rendered the health sub-centre non-operational, forcing nurses and other staff to cease work due to the lack of a functional facility. Consequently, the villagers face severe risks during medical emergencies.

Khelma Village Council Chairman (KVCC), Neithanglien Saith, revealed that multiple appeals to the health department and the State Government have gone unanswered. "We have appealed to them numerous times, yet no government representatives have visited or provided assistance," he said. Villagers had to sell belongings or borrow money to buy materials to repair their damaged roofs. Those unable to afford new roofing continue to live in dire conditions.

Saith emphasized that the sub-centre’s interior has been further damaged by rain due to prolonged neglect. "We urge the Nagaland Government to conduct a spot verification and assist us in any possible way," he pleaded.

Khelma village, approximately 84 km from Jalukie town, is one of the last villages under Athibung sub-division bordering Assam.
