Empowering Dreams: Ensuring Sikkim’s Remote Youth Thrive with Central Support
MP Urges for Inclusivity in Internship Initiative for Youth from Remote Areas
GANGTOK, Jul 30, 2024 [IST]: Indra Hang Subba, the sole Lok Sabha MP from Sikkim, addressed the Parliament, urging the inclusion of youth from remote states like Sikkim in the Centre’s internship initiative under the Union Budget 2024-25. Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Subba welcomed the budget’s focus on youth employability through skilling. He praised the forward-looking nature of the budget, noting its plan to enable one crore Indian youths to secure internships with top companies across the nation.
Subba emphasized the importance of ensuring that such opportunities are extended to youth from remote areas and not just those in large cities and nearby regions. He called for collaboration across party lines to ensure the initiative’s comprehensive implementation. Moreover, Subba argued that states and their machineries should be actively involved in this program to guarantee that young people from places like Sikkim can also benefit and subsequently secure job opportunities.
Highlighting the budget’s emphasis on skilling, Subba advocated for the integration of skilling programs at the school level. This, he suggested, would provide students with additional skills and improve their employability by the time they graduate.
Subba expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for allocating funds to rebuild Sikkim after the Teesta flash flood in October 2023. He also drew attention to the significant risks posed by glacial lakes to the Himalayan region and national water security, urging the establishment of a regional glaciology center in Sikkim. This center would monitor, study, and mitigate the dangers of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) due to climate change, as well as work on revising national policies to address these high-risk areas from a local perspective.
The Lok Sabha MP’s comprehensive address underscored the need for inclusive opportunities and proactive measures to address both environmental and employment concerns in remote regions like Sikkim.
