Why Travel to Paris is Plummeting: The Impactful Summer Olympic Games Effect
Amid preparations for the Summer Olympics in Paris, the city experienced a surprising downturn in tourism. Although predictions suggested a travel boom, multiple factors, including steep prices for accommodations and event tickets, deterred many would-be visitors, even local residents. This phenomenon, observed in previous Olympic host cities such as London, Athens, and Atlanta, often sees fewer tourists than anticipated, according to John Grant, chief analyst at OAG. Businesses in Paris noted the trend as airlines like Air France and Delta recorded losses due to high fare pricing, while Ryanair benefited by increasing its capacity.
Hotel occupancy rates also plummeted, expected to hit 60% in early July, down from previous years. Initially raising rates to capitalize on the expected influx of tourists, many hotels had to discount prices after slow spring bookings. Likewise, Airbnb hosts, who saw a record number of listings, had to cut rates significantly.
Paris’ tourism board reported an 8% decline in international air arrivals in June and a 15% dip in July leading up to the Olympics. While they predict an 11% increase during the Games, this is offset by significant drops in arrivals from the Middle East and Oceania.
Despite these economic struggles, Airbnb claims the Paris 2024 Olympics will be its largest hosting event ever, although the exact number of bookings remains undisclosed. Additionally, a considerable number of unsold Olympic tickets persist in the resale market, reflecting diminished demand.
Grant highlighted that the Olympics’ broad appeal, spanning various sports, lacks the specific draw of focused events like Wimbledon, making it less compelling as a singular tourist attraction. This broad spectrum may dilute potential travel interest, failing to deliver the expected tourism boom.
