Searing Struggle: Dibrugarh Battles Unprecedented Heatwave | Guwahati News
Dibrugarh Braces for Record-Breaking Heatwave
The picturesque town of Dibrugarh, renowned for its lush tea gardens and scenic landscapes, is currently enduring an unprecedented heatwave. Temperatures in the town have skyrocketed to record highs this summer, causing significant discomfort and health concerns among residents. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Dibrugarh experienced its all-time highest temperature of 38.8°C on May 25. This extreme heat persisted, with the mercury touching 38.5°C on July 27 and 38.4°C a day before.
The Aviation Meteorological Office at Mohanbari, operating under the regional meteorological center in Guwahati, confirmed that the entire northeastern region is affected by severe heat waves. "The maximum temperature has breached the 38-degree Celsius mark thrice this year, with temperatures hovering 7 to 8 degrees above normal," an official stated.
Local residents are battling the intense heat, taking measures to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during peak hours. "The heat is unbearable. We’ve started drinking more water and limiting our time outside," said Abhigyan Hazarika, a Dibrugarh resident.
The heatwave has heightened public health concerns, with hospitals reporting a surge in heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and dehydration. Dr. Gayatri Gogoi from the Assam Medical College and Hospital emphasized the importance of recognizing heat stress symptoms and taking necessary precautions. "We advise people to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary sun exposure," she said.
This alarming rise in temperatures and its impact on daily life underscores the broader challenges posed by climate change. Globally, similar issues have been observed, with Morocco’s Middle Atlas region experiencing deadly temperatures of 48.3°C, and the U.S. Southwest suffering from extreme heat, leading to multiple fatalities among hikers.
In related news, the India Meteorological Department forecasts moderate rainfall in Delhi, with recent rains causing some disruptions but air quality remaining moderate at an AQI of 122. Residents are cautioned to stay informed and take necessary precautions during heavy rainfall.
