Shocking Verdict: Ex-APSC Chairman Rakesh Pal Sentenced to 14 Years, 31 Officials Face 4-10 Year Jail Terms
GUWAHATI: A special court in Guwahati delivered a significant judgment on Monday, July 29, sentencing former APSC chairman Rakesh Pal to 14 years in jail and imposing a fine of Rs 2 lakh for his involvement in the cash-for-jobs scam. This high-profile case revolved around the corrupt appointments of agricultural development officers (ADO) in Assam.
Additionally, the court sentenced Basanta Kumar Doley and Samedur Rahman to 10 years in prison each, along with fines of Rs 50,000. The three were part of a group of 32 individuals convicted in the case, which originated from a 2017 complaint filed at Bhangagarh police station under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The remaining 29 convicts received 4-year jail terms and fines of Rs 10,000 each.
The Gauhati High Court had earlier convicted the 32 accused on July 22. Another 11 individuals were acquitted due to insufficient evidence, while APSC member Binita Rynjha turned approver, providing key information that helped the prosecution.
The scandal came to light when a candidate who failed to secure a job accused the officials of inflating marks in exchange for money. The complainant’s allegations were substantiated by information obtained through an RTI request.
This judgment marks a pivotal moment in Assam’s ongoing battle against corruption, reaffirming the state’s commitment to upholding integrity within its public institutions.
