In the past five years, 633 Indian students have died overseas due to various causes, with Canada reporting the highest number of fatalities at 172, the Indian government disclosed in the Lok Sabha on Friday. Among these deaths, 19 were attributed to attacks, with Canada again topping the list at nine, followed by six in the United States, as detailed by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh.

The data indicates that out of the 633 total deaths, the United States accounted for 108 incidents, the United Kingdom for 58, Australia for 57, and Russia for 37. Additionally, Ukraine reported 18, Germany 24, while Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and Cyprus each recorded 12 cases, and China reported eight.

Singh highlighted that these deaths were due to a variety of reasons including natural causes, accidents, and medical conditions. The Minister emphasized that ensuring the safety and security of Indian students abroad remains a high priority for the Indian government, with Indian missions abroad maintaining regular contact with students.

Responding to a separate inquiry, Singh noted that 48 Indian students have been deported from the United States over the past three years. The specific reasons for deportation were not disclosed by U.S. authorities, but Singh indicated that possible causes include unauthorized employment, withdrawal from classes, expulsion or suspension, and failure to report optional practical training employment, all of which can result in visa termination and unlawful presence, leading to deportation.
