Experts Urge Ending Mental Health Stigma: Unlock the Empowering Potential of Your Emotional Brain
In an engaging wellness webinar titled “Emotional Brain and Unquiet Mind: Managing the Nexus,” hosted by The Hindu in collaboration with Buddhi Clinic, experts shed light on the complexities of emotional and mental health. Dr. Ennapadam S. Krishnamoorthy, Founder of Buddhi Clinic, delved into the concept of the emotional brain, elucidating the roles of the hippocampus and amygdala. He emphasized that our brain’s 86 billion neurons and 100 trillion connections significantly influence our emotions and responses, particularly the limbic system’s fight, flight, and freeze reactions.
Dr. Vivek Misra, Director of Neurosciences and Neuromodulation at Buddhi Clinic, expanded on the discussion with an in-depth look at modern neuroscientific technologies, likening the brain to an orchestra. When this orchestra loses its harmony, it can lead to behavioural, psychiatric, and neurological issues. Dr. Misra also pointed out the limitations and risks associated with traditional treatments, including invasive brain surgeries, highlighting that these are not easily accessible for everyone.
Importantly, the speakers underscored the principle of neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections—and its potential in treatment. They urged attendees to embrace conventional treatments and work towards dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health issues. The session offered a deep dive into the intersection of emotional and mental health, promoting a broader understanding of how we can manage and improve our overall well-being.
