Delhi High Court Orders Patanjali to Remove False Claims Against Allopathic Doctors

GUWAHATI: On Monday, July 29, the Delhi High Court issued an interim order directing Patanjali Ayurved and its promoters, including Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna, to retract false statements accusing allopathic doctors of causing COVID-19 deaths. This ruling follows a defamation lawsuit filed by several doctors’ associations.

Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani mandated that Patanjali and its associates must delete specific tweets within three days. Should they fail to comply, social media platforms will be instructed to remove the content.

The lawsuit, initiated by the Resident Doctors’ Association of AIIMS branches in Rishikesh, Patna, and Bhubaneswar, along with other medical associations, alleges that Ramdev and his team falsely claimed allopathy was responsible for numerous COVID-19 fatalities. These misleading assertions, according to the plaintiffs, erode public trust in allopathic medicine and COVID-19 vaccines, potentially causing individuals to shun proven treatments and thus violating their right to health under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.

The court’s interim order seeks to curtail the dissemination of such harmful misinformation and safeguard the credibility of government-endorsed medical treatments.
