Meghalaya Tourism Forum Calls for Government Action Amidst HNYF Blockade

Guwahati: The Meghalaya Rural Tourism Forum (MRTF) has urged the government to take immediate steps to safeguard the state’s tourism sector following a blockade imposed by the Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF). The blockade has significantly hindered travel to key tourist destinations, casting a shadow over the local tourism industry.

Representing a broad spectrum of tourism stakeholders across Meghalaya, the forum assembled on Friday to voice serious concerns about the HNYF’s activities. They argue that the blockades have endangered the livelihoods of numerous individuals dependent on the tourism sector.

MRTF Chairman Alan West Kharkongor highlighted the critical role of peace and security in fostering tourism growth, appealing to the authorities to curb actions that induce fear among tourists.

The forum also underscored the imperative need to address local transportation challenges and prioritize infrastructure development, such as building an airport, to enhance the tourism sector’s appeal and access.

Tourism businesses in Pynursla, one of the adversely impacted areas, have vociferously condemned the blockade. They lament that such disruptions have tarnished the region’s reputation as a hospitable destination.

The call to action by MRTF reflects the broader concerns of the community and an urgent need for sustainable solutions to support and grow Meghalaya’s tourism industry amidst ongoing challenges.
