Meghalaya Tourism Industry Outraged by Tourist Harassment; Faces Heartbreaking Losses
Tourism stakeholders in Meghalaya have strongly condemned recent incidents where tourists were illegally stopped by NGOs and pressure groups in popular destinations Sohra and Dawki. These disruptions have led to a severe blow to the industry, causing a 30% decline in bookings and potentially a 50% increase in tour cancellations.
The flashpoint occurred on July 26, when members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation (HNYF) halted vehicles from Assam at Umtyngar junction, about 20 km from Shillong. The group demanded these vehicles, primarily carrying tourists to Sohra and Dawki, be turned back.
Industry representatives have voiced their concerns, urging these groups to stop intimidating tourists, as such actions tarnish the state’s reputation and harm its economy. They noted a recent US travel advisory and other violent acts against workers, stressing the urgency for restoring order and normalcy.
The HNYF has been pushing for a policy that restricts the entry of outside-registered vehicles carrying tourists. Although police efforts aimed to maintain peace and order, the situation remains tense.
Despite these challenges, tourism stakeholders expressed regret for any inconveniences faced by tourists and called on travellers to continue visiting Meghalaya. They underscored the state’s natural beauty, renowned hospitality, and the welcoming nature of its people. The stakeholders are committed to ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for all visitors and are working diligently to address and mitigate the issues at hand.
