Shillong, July 26 (IANS): PM Modi Criticizes Opposition over Agnipath Scheme During Kargil War Memorial Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking on Friday at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh, commemorated the 25th anniversary of Vijay Diwas and criticized the Opposition for politicizing the Agnipath Scheme, an initiative aimed at reforming the Indian Armed Forces.
Highlighting the scheme’s significance, PM Modi stressed that Agnipath is designed to keep the Indian military young and combat-ready by addressing the higher average age of Indian soldiers compared to global standards. He reminded that numerous committees had long debated this issue, but previous governments showed no willingness to implement necessary reforms.
The Prime Minister lambasted the opposition for spreading misinformation and obstructing the scheme for their personal gain. He accused them of having previously engaged in defense scams, attempting to stall the modernization of the Air Force, and planning to freeze the Tejas fighter plane project.
Addressing concerns about the scheme being a cost-saving measure, PM Modi clarified that pension-related issues would not arise for another 30 years, and the government’s swift action was driven by national security priorities rather than political calculations.
Furthermore, PM Modi condemned the opposition for misleading the youth and neglecting the welfare of soldiers. He pointed out that his government fulfilled the promise of one rank one pension, built the National War Memorial, and equipped soldiers with adequate bulletproof jackets—actions he claimed were neglected by past administrations.
