Justice and Dignity: Gauhati High Court Orders Cachar Administration to Preserve Bodies of Hmar ‘Militants’ After High-Stakes Encounter
The Gauhati High Court on July 25 issued a directive to the Cachar district administration and police to ensure the preservation of the bodies of three alleged Hmar militants, who were recently killed in a police encounter, by keeping them in the morgue. This directive came in response to a petition filed by the families of the deceased, who are members of the Hmar community.
The court’s order underlines the importance of preserving the bodies in order to conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances of their deaths. To ensure impartiality, the court has instructed that the autopsies be conducted by medical professionals from outside Assam, thereby addressing concerns about accuracy and fairness in the investigative process.
The militants were reportedly killed on July 17 during a police operation. The families’ petition calls for transparency and justice, raising questions about the legitimacy of the encounter and the events leading up to the deaths of the three individuals.
Additionally, authorities are also focusing on another incident where the Border Security Force (BSF) and Tripura Police seized a significant cache of narcotics worth lakhs, underscoring ongoing efforts to combat illicit activities in the region.
The case highlights critical issues related to law enforcement, community relations, and the pursuit of justice in the region. The court’s involvement aims to ensure that due process is followed and that the investigation remains unbiased, reflecting a broader demand for transparency and accountability in situations involving lethal force by police.
